Special Kid Goes to Kindergarten: Meeting with the School Board Consultant

So, today was the big day.  We had a representative from the school board come to meet us today so they can get an idea of what kind of services Angel needs come September.  Her actual title is "Special Programs Consultant, Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education Support Services"--Wow, now that is a mouthful.  We had asked our Resource Teacher to come today as well so she could offer some input in the meeting as well.  And since the school board rep had an assistant with her, it was quite a full house.

We talked about Angel's strengths; things she likes doing, things she does well, things that keep her attention.  And we talked about areas where Angel needs some help.  Top of the list of course was toilet training.  We have been working on this for sometime, but since Angel has some sensory problems, she doesn't feel when she is wet and it also doesn't bother her (which is funny because some touches bother her to no end).

They seemed quite impressed with the fact that Angel has made big gains in the last year.  Our resource teacher was telling them that when she first came last summer, Angel wouldn't even look at her, and now she will talk to her and ask her for help with things as well.  She has made such great gains over the last year and a half, particularly with speech.  When I compare where she was when we started looking into her developmental delays, I'm amazed with how far she has come.

Our next step with the school board will be a meeting with the school probably in the next month or so to sit down with the principal and touch base and make sure that she can get the supports she needs in the classroom. It is all happening so fast.  I'm becoming more used to the idea of Angel going to school, but I really wish there was more information about the new full day kindergarten program.  Even the school board does not have a lot of information about it!
